Greetings,
Following the recent announcement by the RNZA Association of the offer of funding the laying of a wreath at ANZAC Day services, an informal group of ex gunners who meet in Dunedin on the last Thursday afternoon of each month for a social hour (or two, three), untill recently at the Dunedin RSA untill it closed, for a convivial ale and to reminisce about The Regiment, have determined it is time to act. This group has, very loosley, entitled itself "Gunners Inc" and comprises about 20 odd members with, on average, about 10 members per meeting. The former formal "Gunners Association" folded some 20 odd years ago and has never been resurected mainly due to apathy among the majority of ex gunners in Dunedin who are mainly former "CMT" and "National Servicemen".
Untill now there has been no official "Artillery specific" representation to the ANZAC day wreath laying ceremony. The Dunedin "Gunners Inc" group now believe it is time. The announcement by the RNZA Association is timely and this group would like to take advantage of the offer.
Attached is a (not very good) photograph of 9 (former 31(B) Battery, 3 Field Regiment) members of the group taken at the "Forbury Racecourse franchised Bar" during our last get together.
From left to right :
Al Martin, Warren Harris, Bill Olsen, Doug Boyce, Brian Donaldson, Ben Bolton (RAA), Wally Dalziel, Geoff McLennan and (crouched front) - Alan Riddle.
Following the closure of the Dunedin RSA bar and the holding company of the building and facilities being placed into receivership, the group will meet on the last Thursday of each month in the Garrison Club (former WO's & Sgt's mess) of the Kensington Army Hall (KAH) usually from about 1700 hours till 1900 (or 2000, or 2100)Hrs or whenever the last of the players & stayers determine they have had enough!
Fraternal greetings,
Bill Olsen
