This is not a purely gunner matter but is of service interest to any one over seventy [and maybe a few others as well]. If you have any further information follow the links - especially the second one.
A group - originally out of Whangarei - has been promoting a campaign to have a land memorial erected to commemorate the loss of the HMS Puriri and five of its crew on 14 MAy 1941. This is the promotion poster with initial details.
This was New Zealand Navy's only loss of a naval vessel in NZ waters during WW2. The memorial is to record the event as part of our nation's story, to honour those whose lives were lost and to commemorate the work of the minesweeper fleet which did so much to keep our sea lanes free from the minefields laid by and after April 1940.
You will note that the dedication and unveiling is being recognised as of national significance in that it will be performed by the Chief of Royal New Zealand Navy, Rr Admiral A J Parr MVO. Veterans Affairs has also provided a signifcant grant which underpinned the Northland RSA contributions.
We wish to find relatives of those killed at sea and of the 27 survivors. 70 years later, this is a tall order! We have now procured a crew list which is at this link.
