This TIME article is fascinating when you compare its content with Flashman, an historically accurate novel by George MacDonald Fraser. Flashman's military adventures take you behind enemy lines and into the even more dangerous company of Afghani 'friends and allies'. It culminates with the utter destruction of a great Army by the Afghan rebels. The only difference is that between the novel and the TIME article is that the events in Flashman took place in the 1840s. Nothing has changed., especially human nature.
