RNZA Assn; `The Way Ahead`, Membership

Following on from our last idea about establishing forums for `Areas of Common Interest` for us gunners, (zero response to date!, but its still only early days), we are now ready to propose our next element of the plan.
I think membership of the RNZA Assn should be AUTOMATIC for all gunners (once they have been marched in to the Regiment), and that, wait for it, it should be FREE!.
We would maintain a database which would truly reflect the `family of gunners`. So how would we fund our activities? well the $20 we currently require as a sub for membership would be a `charitable donation` and we would continue to fund the newsletter through this. Other funding would have to be raised `specifically for its intended purpose eg updating the website. We would continue to issue invoices and receipts for the annual donation, and only those who have paid will receive the newsletter (which of course will contain a section on `Areas of Common Interest`).

So if you want to read the background reasoning for this proposal, please pay your $20 "sub?" immediately so that you can receive a copy of the March Newsletter, which will contain a more detailed explanation of my proposal.

Areas of Common Interest

In the development of our plan for `The Way Ahead` for the Assn, we have identified the potential for development of forums for areas in which we as gunners share a common interest; areas such as developments in ordnance design, communications, survey, target acquisition,battlefield tactics etc etc.

As a start point it would be great to get articles relating to developments in these areas into the newsletter on a regular basis. Now the crunch question. Does anyone out there read publications on these topics (or know anyone who does), and would be able to provide extracts or precis` of articles on a regular basis for the newsletter. The name Tom Ellen sprang to my mind when I was contemplating who fitted this profile, so if anyone is in contact with Tom maybe you could forward this blog entry to him. It would be nice to catch up with him in the `where are they now?` column of the newsletter anyway. For everyone else, please put the thinking caps on and help get this very interesting part of our plan for the way ahead underway.

Now is your opportunity. We would like to pay for it!.
Our aim is not to have wreaths laid per se; it is to encourage gunners old and new to get together and reestablish old kinships, to encourage the comaraderie of that old gunner spirit. Many servicemen at any given ANZAC Day service do not even realise that there are other gunners in the group. This is an opportunity to get to know your local fellow gunners. We will also advise in due course where elements of 16 Fd Regt will be parading on ANZAC Day so that any ex gunners can get along and support them.
To qualify for this fantastic FREE OFFER, all you need to do is get together at least six gunners, and take a photo of the group, which must then be sent to Marie for the Newsletter.

The plan is based on developing what is already in place and instituting two new welfare programs in conjunction with 16 Fd Regt.

Herewith the bullet points;
1. Membership would be for all gunners (serving and ex), not restricted by having paid the annual sub. We would still keep the $20 per year `donation` in place to cover the cost of printing and posting newsletters, and only those who are financial would be eligible to receive a printed copy. We would then become truly representative of the whole `family of gunners`.
2.The primary aim remains welfare and we would aim at reinvigorating the annual calendar (4 main events through the year being ANZAC Day, Gunners Day, Reunion/AGM, St Barabaras Day) by such things as the ANZAC Day Free Wreath offer which you may have seen posted on Muzzleflashes.
3. We wish to institute two new welfare programs;
a. Mentorship Program; to provide mentors outside of the command chain to serving soldiers. (I will be guiding this program myself and I will start asking around shortly for ex-gunners who would also like to help as mentors for serving NCOs and YOs. The recipients of this email would seem to be ideally suited to the requirement!). I will advise when the details of how we provide this service are worked out with 16 Fd Regt.
b.Transition/Employment Program. We would like to use our network of HR experts and Employers to provide assistance to gunners as they move to Civvy St. John Botica has agreed to look at how this program may work, and hopefully a network may be established which any of our members may access, not just serving gunners.
4. We see the opportunity to develop the `Areas of Common Interest` such as reenactments/technical equipment forums etc. Colin Jansen will be looking at this area.
All these ideas are in DRAFT only at this stage, and the committee welcomes any feedback you may have on these proposals.

A certain lieutenant colonel at Luke AFB deserves a big pat on the back. Apparently, an individual who lives somewhere near Luke AFB wrote to the local paper complaining about a group of F-16s that disturbed his/her day at the mall. When that individual read the response it must have stung quite a bit . . .

Sir,
I refer to the recently released edict that would see the Band of The RNZA dis-established.
I am a former Member of The Band and also a Regular Force Soldier with Active Service in Viet Nam. I am very proud of my time with the Band.

This sick joke is systemic with the Infantry v Artillery rivalry which I experienced first hand in my last posting to the then Auckland Army Area. Indeed, I was subjected to what would today be classed as “Workplace Harassment” by a Staff Sergeant who had been Commissioned and become “God” and to whom any other Unit personnel who were not Infantry were just crumbs to be squashed beneath his heels.
It is unfortunate that also there was the additional side assessment of Territorial v Regular Service, Territorials being commonly referred to as “Cut Lunch Commandos”

I was a member of this HQ when the existing Director of Music was summilarly dismissed due to some conflict of interest or other. This Man had given Sterling Service to the Band sine the 1930’s, how disgusting ,given his stance in the Military [MBE for Services rendered] and the Brass Band Movement.

The Band itself has a 148 year History to the New Zealand Defence Force and to remove it with one stroke of a Faceless “Bean Counter” who see an opportunity to save some $100.000 a year which is being touted as all it costs to maintain this Band is a travesty of justice. It also places the History and “Mana” of the NZ Army at risk to a great degree.

History is on the side of this Band, having been raised by the “Citizenry of Auckland” and it is to the inheritors of this Title, any such removal of this Band from the Auckland scenario should be addressed. I doubt that many would see the Dis- establishment of this Band as being in their best interests given the Musical Scenario it provides to the City and its Environments. It’s touted replacement, The Navy Band is not in the same category. It’s not Brass for the first instance, if you don't know the difference I am sure there are many who will advise you.

I would like this letter to be forwarded to The Chief of Army and The Governor General himself and I look forward to their comments.

I feel that my Service in The NZ Army is definitely “slighted.” and hard to comprehend, what a waste of years!.

It covers my time in Korea and then makes an analysis of the intelligence mistakes which resulted in the war. Seven Military Bands in the Balance.

To all concerned bandsmen, musicians and friends,
Many of you will know by now that seven NZ military bands are going to be axed in two months time. Most of you know my passion for our NZ military bands, whatever service they may be in.
To make 70 % of our military musicians redundant is a draconian step by a government that is clearly out of touch with the reality of military traditions and music.
I have penned my thoughts comments and sent them to HQ NZDF in Wellington.
I have attached a copy of my comments and thoughts on the proposal. I have tried to be brief but the subject is complex. Please follow this link to the full article.

I ask all of you to write or email your own thoughts to anyone you like, such as your local mayor, the RNZRSA, the defence chief, the local media etc. You may use my submission or parts of it if you like. Lets spread the word that we do not want to put over 200 musicians and 172 years of New Zealand's military band history on the scrapheap. We have till the 23 February to do something. After that you can kiss the music goodbye.

Dissolution of Military Bands 2012

The linked file is an invitation to consult, so people should feel free to do a submission. Note especially the short closing time of 23 Feb 2012. There is an email contact in the text of the paper.
The Band is 145 years old with continuous service to New Zealand and Auckland. The cost is very little for the exposure the military gets at a variety of public and official events. The Band of the RNZA provides a service which the RNZN Band will not be able to fill as they are fully commited now.
The RNZA Association will be doing a formal submission on behalf of the Band and Regt once we have collected the info we need.

Bruce Weir, ex V3 RNZIR, and a gunner in 16 Fd Regt has an original copy of a journal dated 1940 and titled TE WAKA O TU (The War Craft), written on board the HMT Aquitania. In it there are 3 verses called "NZ Onward" Perhaps this is where our Infantry Motto may come from :-- quote

Silently slowly slipped the convoy,
Passed the Heads and out to sea,
Gone were the hearts that would grieve in the homeland,
Gone was the land of the proud and the free.

Onwards the convoy, ships and the escort,
On to fight for the fight against wrong;

Passed away: Linda Jones

Linda, beloved wife of Spike Jones, passed away on the night of Thursday, 29 December after a sudden illness. A funeral service for Linda will be held at Romaleigh Funeral Home, 31 Ocean View Road, Northcote, North Shore, 0627, at 10 am on Wednesday, 4 January 2012. Linda and Spike have been strong supporters of the Association, attending almost all reunions until Linda's health began to fail. He was a Locator and in the last few years has been a stalwart of the group who kept the RAA Museum at North Head going.

Frank Hopkinson: Eulogy

Barry reports that Frank was farewelled in good gunner style – a TF Guard and firing party, Gunner Band, senior RF & TF NCO pallbearers led by the RSM, gun carriage, and good representation from every period of Frank’s gunner service. The service was excellent and the family were grateful for the support of the soldiers of the present Regt and the Band for the funeral. It was a job well done for 16 Fd Regt’s longest serving CO.

Frank's service, a full military funeral, will be held at the Naval Chapel of St Christopher, HMNZS Philomel (Naval Base), Queens Parade, Devonport, Auckland on Friday 23rd December 2011 at 10.00am. Members of the Association are asked to attend.
Frank had a long career as a Gunner, including service in Korea and Vietnam. He served with 4 Medium over a long period, and he was CO 16 Field Regt RNZA.
He was a staunch supporter of the RNZA Association and served as our President for two terms until illness forced him to stand down.

Spa Hotel Wharenui for sale.

The following appeared in the Rotorua Daily Post on Friday 9 December 2011.
The sale of the privately owned wharenui Te Tiki a Tamamutu in Taupo is still being negotiated.
Tenders for the privately owned wharenui at The Spa Hotel closed on 25 November and it was reported a tender price of between $5 and $12 million has been accepted. Of importance and one of the reasons why the wharenui was being sold was the present owners wanted it to go to the best people, who understood how to look after it.
Both Te Arawa and Tuwnaretoa had claims to the wharenui. Tene Waitere who with his mentor Wero Taroi carved the wharenui Te Taki a Tamamutu in the 1860’s.
Te Tiki a Tamautu which is regarded as being of national importance was commissioned by chief Hohepa Tamamutu of Oruanui, it has 44 carved figures, panels and pillars. It was the last house carved by the master carver Wero Taroi. Chief Hopea Tamamutu sold it to a European when it was only partly completed. It then became part of The Spa Hotel complex.

Those of us who have been to RNZAA meetings at Taupo will remember this very distinctive building.

I was advised today that Yogi passed away last Tuesday and was cremated on Friday 9 December at the request of his son in Australia. Sadly his funeral details were not, to my knowledge, promulgated and therefore Yogi's farewell was not very well attended.
I would appreciate information regarding Yogi's Army service etc as I have been asked to write a eulogy for the Papakura RSA Newsletter.
It seems sad that Yogi's passing slipped through our networks thus indicating we should keep closer vigilance on our older members.

Les Kairau's medals are on their way home

Les Kairau served with 161 Bty in Vietnam. He died in Hamilton in 2008.
On 17 October, Muzzle Flashes asked for any leads on Les's family so his rediscovered medals could be returned. Good news - his granddaughter Harete came forward and the medals will be returned to Les's widow and family.
The return of these medals has been made possible by the voluntary work of Glyn Llanwarne and his team at Lost Medals Australia, for which we are thankful. And they appreciated the part Muzzle Flashes played in the story.

3 Auck North Inf Bn will be holding their charter parade in Auckland on Sat 3 Dec, and 11/4 Bty will be part of that parade. The parade will mark the handover of command of 11/4 Bty back to 16 Field Regt, and the Associations of both 3 Auck North and ourselves (The RNZA Assn) will be incorporated into the activities.
Outline of acivities, Sat 3 December:
10.00 am Assemble, Aotea Square, Queen St, Auckland
11.00 am Mayor inspects, 3 Bn presented with Charter
11.30 am March down Queen St
12.00 noon Return by bus to Aotea Square for mayoral luncheon (including Assn members).
This is a great opportunity for ex-gunners to show their support to the serving soldiers. It would be great to have a big turnout by Association members.

Reunion 'End of Mission'

Hi Everyone,
It's done and dusted and we have received 'End of Misson' for the reunion.
The results have been very positive with many comments of approval and only a few complaints.
We hope that everyone enjoyed the weekend in Christchurch or at least had the opportunity to renew old friendships and consolidate new ones. We certainly enjoyed ourselves and we tried to give everyone something to remember from the weekend.
We were amazed at the generosity of our Australian colleagues and comrades with their gifts of the banners, one for each Island, and from a Christchurch RSA perspective, we are very proud to be able to hold this banner on behalf of the Southern Gunners. We thank our Aussie mates for their generosity which has served to further cement the comradeship between ANZACs, particularly Gunners.
The dinner on Saturday night was tremendous with 107 Gunners and guests sitting down to eat. There was representation at that dinner from throughout NZ and from Australia and the Cook Islands, how great is that? We saw the presentation of the banners, the presentation to the NZ Gunner of the Year and also the promotion of a young Gunner who has been a major contributor to the organising committee for the entire weekend.
Sunday was great. The hotel staff were absolutely gob smacked that we would bring a field gun into a hotel carpark and hold a memorial service there with bugler, wreaths and all. They are now telling everyone in Christchurch that they now have one over all the others. They were very aware of the respect that was paid by our members to our colleagues and friends that have gone before us.
The RNZA Association AGM had a great turn out and it is great to see that we now have two new representatives on the committee 'at large' in Bill Olsen representing the sououth of the South and Skin Frances representing the north of the south. We understand that there has been an upsurge in membership of the Association as a result of the reunion and that is always good news.
The good news for us is that everyone enjoyed their visit to our shaky city, that there were no shakes to dampen the enjoyment of the weekend, and that everyone has returned home safely.
Let's get ready for next year in Auckland.

Vela Lavella NZ Gunner Memorial - a great outcome

The RNZA Association has sent $738.20 for the Vela Lavella Memorial fund, from members' donations and the Association's matching contribution.
The surplus after contributing to the memorial will go to the local village church for their reconstruction project, with the message that we here in the Gunner community in NZ are very grateful for their efforts in helping in the restoration of the Memorial and its ongoing upkeep.
Our Colonel Commandant, Barry Dreyer, comments that this is a very pleasing outcome, due to the generosity of the donors, and that the memorial should now be more permanent for our Gunner comrades, on the beach wher they died in 1943.

Type 92 Mtn Gun.

Tim Randle, ex RNZEME has a long term project restoring a type 92 Mountain Gun. These Japanese guns were used widely in South East Asia during WW2.

3 Auck North Charter Parade 3 Dec 2011

3 Auck North Inf Bn will be holding their charter parade in Auckland on Sat 3 Dec, and 11/4 Bty will be part of that parade. The parade will mark the handover of command of 11/4 Bty back to 16 Field Regt, and the Associations of both 3 Auck North and ourselves (The RNZA Assn) will be incorporated into the activities.
Outline of acivities, Sat 3 December
10.00 am Assemble, Aotea Square, Queen St, Auckland
11.00 am Mayor inspects, 3 Bn presented with Charter
11.30 am March down Queen St
12.00 noon Return by bus to Aotea Square for mayoral luncheon (incluning Assn members).
This is a great opportunity for ex-gunners to show their support to the serving soldiers. It would be great to have a big turnout by Association members.

In difficult circumstances and over many months the Christchurch gunners stepped up to the layer's seat and turned on a weekend that will be hard to beat. Farewell to an 'Old Gunner': Slim Cunningham

The Dunedin funeral service for recently passed 11583 WO1 (rtd) Ian Herbert (Slim) Cunningham was well attended by former South Island gunners, regular and territorial. Slim's service was held on Oct 28 and he was in his early 80's. He initially joined the RNZN in the early 1950’s and served in the gunnery branch both here and in Korea before joining the RNZA. He then went on to serve in Malaya as a Bombardier with the ‘Originals’ in that Battalion's mortar platoon. Later, during the 60's he served two tours in Vietnam as Battery Guide.
Here in NZ he continued to instruct gunners, officers and young, eager beaver cadets, in the fine and delicate craft of gunnery. (Sometimes, for a few of us, those teachings were accompanied by a well-aimed boot to the darker regions but one never forgot his lessons!) Slim was acknowledged for his good sense of humour, never bearing a grudge and for his knowledge and advice. Fittingly a number of people with Gunner affiliations passed on messages that were read at the service. Included were Tiny Hill who described Slim as his ‘right-hand man” during the former's term as 161 Bty BSM and Graeme Black, who expressed his respect for Slim’s knowledge and friendship. Graeme Henderson and Lox Kellas were also on hand. Former RNZIR stalwart Fred Daniels read the RSA tribute.
During the past four years Slim battled with the effects of a severe illness but, no surprise here, never complained. According to family his only comment when they enquired as to his health was, "Old age isn't what it's cracked up to be!" As an aside, for those who know Ethne, Slim’s wife, she is well and was surrounded by her and her husband's supportive whanau.
Go well Mr Cunningham. Much respect!

Some key points for everyone attending -

Thursday 10/11/2011

The registration desk will be open at the Speights Alehouse Bealey Ave from midday in the function room.
Tea/coffee and bar facilities will be available on arrival;
There will be a Happy Hour/Meet and Greet at the Speights Alehouse Bealey Ave in the function room from 16:30 onwards.
All registrants will have a name tag that has our loyalty card number printed on it so that we get cheaper drinks.
With the assistance of the Christchurch City Council we have put together a registration pack that contains information about Christchurch. Be aware that some of the info may be earthquake dated but most of the main attractions are open, just don't try to go to either of the cathedrals!

The registration desk will be open at the Speights Alehouse Bealey Ave from 08:00 to 10:30.
There will be transport available from the Speights Alehouse Bealey Ave from 10:30 for those that want transport to go to the Armistice Day Parade
The Christchurch Armistice Day Parade and service will be held at the Henry Nicholas VC, MM statue on the banks of the Avon River at the corner of Hereford St and Cambridge Tce opposite the Central Police Station about 300m from the Bridge of Remembrance.
The Armistice Day Parade will form at 10:50 and will be called to order a 11:00hrs by MC Mr Paul O'Connor
The Col. Comdt. and Mike Dakin will place wreaths on behalf of RNZA and RNZA Association at the service.
There will be a light lunch and bar facilities in the function room of the Speights Alehouse Bealey Ave after the Parade and service.
The Registration desk will be open from 12:30 onwards at the Speights Alehouse Bealey Ave
The afternoon is free and delegates should note that this is Canterbury Show Day and the AMP Show will be in full swing at the showgrounds. We can provide transport for anyone that wishes to visit the show. Shops will be open and the new 'Restart' shopping mall in Cashel St that opened last weekend will be in full swing. Good shopping and a chance to get a close up view of the Christchurch 'Red Zone'.
There will be a Happy Hour/Meet and Greet at the Speights Alehouse Bealey Ave from 16:30 onwards. The Chch RSA will also join us for their club night.

Saturday 12/11/2011

The buses for the field trip will depart from the Speights Alehouse Bealey Ave carpark at 09:30.
The field trip will include a drive past the Christchurch 'Red Zone' then to Godley Head for a visit to the Coastal Artillery camp where 11 Coastal Battery RNZA were based. This will be followed by a trip to the port of Lyttelton where there will be a BBQ lunch with drinks available followed by a display and demonstration by 39 Mortar Bty RNZA.
The buses will return to the Speights Alehouse Bealey Ave carpark at approximately 15:30. The bar will be open in the function room
The dinner will be held in the Speights Alehouse Bealey Ave 18:30 for 19:00.
Dress for the dinner is jacket with decorations and medals.
There will be wine on tables and bar facilities throughout.
The usual toasts will be made,
There is a partial seating plan that will be on display throughout the weekend.
The Guest Speaker is Vinnie Munroe, international rugby referee

There will be a short remembrance service held in the carpark of the Speights Alehouse Bealey Ave commencing at 09:30.
39 Mortar Bty RNZA will provide a Light Gun as the focal point for this service and wreaths will be laid at the gun by the Col. Comdt and the RNZA Association.
Morning tea will be served from 10:00 - 10:30 in the function room
The RNZA Association AGM will commence in the function room at 10:30 and will be followed by a light lunch with bar facilities.

We currently have 62 registered for the field trip and 101 registered for the dinner.
We are really looking forward to seeing you all in Christchurch next week.

Reunion update

Pete Dawson, brings us up to date:

We have finally nailed down the Lyttelton Recreational Ground caretaker. We have full usage of the ground and the pavilion for Saturday field trip. The keys will be dropped off to me on Wednesday 9/11 and Dee and I will go down and make sure that the pavilion is cleaned up ready for our BBQ on the Saturday.
We've now hit the century for the dinner on Saturday night and the money is coming in nice and steady.
We have now had confirmation from Army that we will have a bugler from 2 Cant Regt RNZIR Band for both the Armistice Day Parade and for our service on Sunday.
The seating plan for the dinner is being filled out with various people placed throughout the plan so that we have a good balance at each leg of the tables. We haven't allocated a full seating plan as such and table places will be marked with name cards. We will (hopefully) have a seating plan on display prior to the dinner but things are very fluid at the moment with new registrations coming in.
We have printed plastic name tags for everyone that has registered and these will be part of the registration pack that will be given out on registration at the venue. The name tabs show the loyalty card number that will allow participants discount drinks whenever they have a drink at the venue.
We also need to make sure that everyone who is coming is aware that we have a courtesy coach available for pick up and delivery to the airport.
Skin [Francis] is doing good work with the Canterbury Regt to obtain history items for the dinner.

The weekend is shaping up to be a great get together and we should continue to encourage our friends to attend. For me it has been a great experience as I have received calls and e-mails from many old friends that I have not heard from for many years. I think that we are onto something really great here and long may it continue into future years.

Vela Lavella: The forgotten NZ gunner memorial

During NZ patrolling a year or so ago in the Solomons, an Op Rata patrol came across a forgotten and derelict Memorial to 15 NZ Gunners KIA during the landings on Vella Lavella in Oct 1943.
The story of the landing, the location and rebuilding of the Memorial, and its dedication is in the attached documents (see below). In brief, there was no Govt, VANZ nor NZ Lotteries assistance for the rebuilding of the Memorial as it is not an official War Graves site.
All of the work has been done by volunteers and the cost of $2500-$3000 has been carried by local NZ High Commission and NZ Def staff, from their own pockets.
The RNZA Association is appealing for donations to defray the costs for those involved and to provide assistance to the local villagers to maintain the Memorial, by way of assistance in cement for the rebuild of the Village church in return for the congregation attending to the Memorial.
As far as I am aware, this is the only purely NZ gunner memorial in existence offshore, so it is an important piece of our history.
The Association has agreed to subsidize any donations dollar for dollar to $500.
Please send your donation by cheque to the Association, made out to the RNZA Association with a note “memorial donation”, or direct credit the RNZA account (38 9007 0694501 000) with Memorial in the reference field.

Sadly I advise that Ethnee Cunningham phoned to say that Slim passed away in Dunedin Hospital on Sunday night 23 Oct. He had been very ill for about four years. His funeral will probably be Thursday. I have phoned Don Kenning and Barry Dreyer; please pass on to any I have missed.
Slim was in the RNZ Navy for the Korean War, served in Malaya with 4.2-in mortars and two tours to Vietnam 1965 with the Originals and late 1967. He was a real character who I and many others served with for years.
The Colonel Commandant adds:
Slim was a cheerful, energetic and professional gunner, who assisted a lot of younger and less experienced gunners in their trades as gunners and soldiers, incl the Col Comdt. Slim was known to many and he will be sadly missed

Mike Wickstead Retires

Greetings to all gunners,
I've managed to secure a place on the Paris marathon on 15 April 2012. I've decided to treat the marathon as a retirement project (retired on 31 July after 21 years in the British civil service): it's also something of a vanity project to convince myself I won't be over the hill at 65 next May.
Doing a reasonable amount of preparatory training. Couple of weekends ago managed a local 16-mile road race from Kingston-upon-Thames. An opportunity to experience and start adjusting to what running with zillions of other people is like. I'll be running in the Gosport half-marathon on 20 November down on the coast near Portsmouth. Currently running about four days a week and have just been for a session round Wimbledon Common and Richmond Park (13.5 miles - with hills!).
Having never run one (or anywhere near as far) before, Also decided to make the most of it for charitable purposes, so have opened a givealittle page in NZ where any $ will go to the Wellington Branch of the Cancer Society.

Christchurch Reunion Progress

Hi Gunners,
We are right on line for a great reunion in Christchurch over 10-13/11/2011.
Current registrations show that we will have at least 80 attending the Dinning-In dinner on the Saturday night which is absolutely brilliant.
Registrations are still coming in.

We will try to accommodate all registrations for the dinner but once we hit the magic 100 mark then we will have to become a bit more innovative to ensure that everyone can participate fully. We can achieve up to 120 seated diners with about 20 on a separate table from the traditional dinner table and legs set up.

The venue is being extremely helpful and nothing has been/is too much for them including allowing us to utilise some of our local Cadet Forces personnel to help out with table service, etc throughout the dinner.

The field trip on Saturday is all on and we have managed to arrange a BBQ lunch at Lyttelton rather than the original plan for pre-packed 'mystery parcels'. We will also have refreshments available on the buses and during lunch for those that feel that they need to rehydrate during the day.

Korea Veterans memorabilia

John's son Tony is seeking contact with any gunners who may have served with his father either in NZ or in Korea. John served the guns from 31 May 1952 until 14 March 1953. At the time of his death (1999) he was living in Stratford. Tony intends visiting Korea and would like to visit where his father was stationed, also he has a number of photos taken by his father which show other "Gunners" and he would like to put a name to those other faces.

He takes tours to a variety of battlefields in Europe and South East Asia so he has generated his own material to be used in briefings. In the process he gives a good description of what to expect .

Great to see in the latest RNZA Newsletter, the photo taken at the opening of the mess in Nui Dat.
Many of course now deceased;
Col Bob Smith who was Force Comd, Maj Red Potts who was BK, WO2 Ivan Trueman who was BQMS , Ssgt Steve Day who was ERE helped Ivan in the Q store
Sgt John Brand who was the Pay Sgt at Force in SAIGON Sgts Colin Ryan and Bob Wirihana who were Gun Sgts on C & D
WO1Darcy Pollard who was BSM, Sgt John Lynch who was Cook Sgt, Sgt Dave Roberts who was Sigs Sgt and Sgt Matt Hotere who was E Gun Sgt.
Sgt Owen "Shorty" Geldard was there with a team of Engrs putting up messes etc and had just done the Sgts Mess ( He lives here in AUSTRALIA).
Up until then we had a combined mess in an IPP tent. The US Sgt was there because they had a relay Stn to 2FFV in LONG BINH from 1 ATF.
2Lt Gordon Stevenson I think was the LO with Col Bob Smith for his visit.
Others: Ssgt Don Potter was Bty Clk Sgt Terry Hughes was A Gun Sgt Trevor Pilcher was B Gun Sgt Danny McCort I think was F Gun though the memory is slipping and I would have thought Fred Biggwither was still there. Sgt Bill Giles was BCs Svy Sgt, I was CP Svy Sgt, WO2 Steve Parker was BG now lives in the UK or did when I visited him in 2003. Maj Harry Honnor of course was BC.
Sgt Pipi Boyd RNZSigs was Tpt Sgt, Sgt Bruce McKenzie was EME Sgt though he was a Veh Mech not a Gun Fitter which was the Sgts slot. He lives here in AUSTRALIA.

When I was in Christchurch recently I met with the Southern Gunner Committee organizing the RNZA Association AGM in Christchurch 10-13 Nov this year. They have an exciting programme mapped out and pretty good attendance agreed so far.
However, we do need to support them. They have had a tough 12 months in Christchurch and we need to get off our backside and get down there to show our support and comradeship as Gunners. Air fares are cheap and there is plenty of accommodation close to the venue including billets if required, so have a look at the forms on the right and get booked and down there.

623322 DOVE, Francis Alexander (Alex), 24 Bn, 2NZEF passed away at Hamilton on Thursday 29 September, aged 87 years. His funeral will be held on Monday 3 October at 11am, St Josephs Catholic Church, Clarkin Road, Hamilton, then to the Hamilton Park RSA Lawn Cemetry, Newstead, Hamilton.

Alex used to provide (at a reasonable rate) the evelopes used by the Editor to post The NZ Gunner out each quarter.

Notes on the Army Re-org and RNZA

Like all other units in the Army, the Regiment will be affected by the continuing changes in Army Organisation. A leaner Regiment and modified roles will pose some interesting situations for Administration and Staff Duties in the field. Reunion and AGM 2011 in Christchurch

With the gathering in Christchurch from 11 to 13 November getting ever closer, now is the time to plan your trip. There are other events in Canterbury at the time so some travel means will need to be booked ahead. Especially Cook Strait ferries.
If you are going overland from Picton, look at your down and back options. There are four variations on the direct run making a more interesting journey each way. And if you haven't been over there for years, this is a good opportunity to visit the West Coast, or take the day return Alpine Express to Greymouth.
Plan now. Book soon. Travel in comfort.

You may find this newly renovated site on Vietnam interesting. It has lots of reference lists, citations and stories on Vietnam.There is still a lot of work in progress on this site, and we welcome any input.Families in particular will enjoy this site as many of the stories and information are not talked about within families.
It is inter-active and allows comments, images and stories to be added to each individual entry for each Vietnam veteran as well as comment on Units, incidents etc.

Reunion 2011 in Christchurch

Just an update on where we are at with 'The Great Christchurch Adventure'.
We currently have registrations (or interest) as per the spreadsheet linked here.

We have had to modify the Field Trip slightly as much of the Godley Head site is now closed due to recent shakes. We will still go to Godley Head but we will now include a visit to the port of Lyttelton which has some significant military and Gunner history. Locally, the Canterbury Gnrs claim they were the first NZ troops to go 'overseas' when they were mobilised to go across Lyttelton Harbour to man Fort Jervois (Ripapa Island disappearing guns). Local folklore says that when the RSM screamed 'fall in' there were many loud splashes - such are our Canterbury men!

There we will be entertained by 39 Mortar Bty RNZA at the Lyttelton Recreation Ground followed by a visit to the historic pre-WW1 Torpedo Boat museum then return to the Speights Alehouse. Lunch and drinks plus entrance fee to the museum remain in the original costing.

The coaches will also try to provide a view of the devastation in the now world famous Christchurch CBD 'Red Zone' on the way to and from the field trip.
It appears that the entire Regiment will be exercising in the SI culminating at the time of our Reunion so that bodes well for a good current Gnr attendance and participation in the various activities and we have commitment from the CO, RSM 16 Fd and the BC, BSM 39 Mortar Bty to assist and support us.

We do have one major problem and that is 'Artillery Port' for the dinner. There are no stocks of R&B left in the SI but we have heard rumours that you guys have a new variety? Are you able to supply us with several cases at our cost? Please let me know.

We have the Col Comdt visiting us in Christchurch tonight and we are truly looking forward to that. Take care and keep safe.

From Willie Walker - This picture shows Murray Broomhall, Alva Stanley and Willie Walker, taken at Enoggra Military Camp Brisbane Thu 18 Aug 2011. The Aust Unit Gallantry Citation was presented by the Governor General of Australia, to the surviving members of D Coy 6 RAR who took part in the battle and the next-of-kin of deceased members. Morrie Stanley had already recieved his before his death last year and Alva is wearing his medals and decorations.

Brig Harry Honnor, CB, MVO

Brig Harry Honnor, CB, MVO receives his Korean Presidential Unit Citation from the Auckland based Consul General for the Republic of Korea, Mr Dae-hee Lee, [click link to picture] in Whangarei on Long Tan Day, 18 August 2011. Brig Honnor is one of only two NZ gunners who fought at both Kapyong and Long Tan so the presentation of the Kapyong citation on Long Tan day was most appropriate. Brig Honnor was AirOP at Kapyong and BC 161 Bty at Long Tan. The other NZer at both battles was Bill Giles, gun number at Kapyong and BC's Survey Sgt at Long Tan. Sadly Bill could not be present at the function as his wife Emma was ill.
The other recipients of the Citation in Whangarei were:

Also of note was the presentation by Mrs Joan Yates of a framed print of the Terence Cunoe painting of A Company, 3 RAR under attack at Kapyong and a framed and named photograph of the original intake into 16 Field Regiment at Waiouru: Fox Troop, 162 Bty in mid 1950.

Both of these presentations were gratefully accepted by Colonel Commandant Barry Dreyer on behalf of the Royal Regiment.
