In 2002 I visited Arras and toured the tunnels there. The local guide pointed out that all side tunnels had strange names given by the tunnellers. These labels were Whangarei, Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Rororua and so forth. I pointed out the sequence and how New Zealanders would be able to navigate by those names, whereupon the guide added that the tunnellers were Kiwis and many of them were Maori. If you ever get the chance, the entry is in the main square in Arras so go and have a look.
